If you are after a simple, lightweight e-bike for short trips or commuting, the Gtech City Lowstep Electric Bike would be an excellent choice. Gtech are a well-known British brand when it comes to cordless home and garden appliances.  The Gtech ebike is designed with urban riding in mind and is powered by a small 250w rear hub motor with a 200Wh battery. For added simplicity there is only one gear, and the rear wheel is driven by a Gates carbon belt drive which means, no more squeaky chains and worrying about getting chain oil on your clothes.

  • 250w rear hub motor with 2 assist levels
  • 200Wh bottle battery
  • Single speed with Gates carbon belt drive
  • Rim brakes

PROS:
  • Minimalist design
  • Very light for an ebike at 16kg
  • Maintenance-free Gates belt drive
  • Excellent customer reviews
  • Good customer service

CONS:
  • Single speed may not suit everyone
  • Low battery range of between 20-30 miles maximum

Verdict
The Gtech City Lowstep Electric Bike is a perfect bike for urban riding or weekend leisure riding. It’s simple design means it is ultra-low maintenance and the Gates belt drive is likely to last the lifetime of the bike. Another great thing about the Gtech is it is so lightweight, that putting it on a car rack shouldn’t pose too much of a problem. My only gripe is the low battery range, but if you do run out of power, the bike is easy enough to pedal with the motor off. Being a single speed bike means it will cope with moderate hills but struggle with very steep hills. If you’re looking for a simple, lightweight e-bike that isn’t going to break the bank. The Gtech is one of the best there is!

It has a small 250w rear electric hub motor powered by a 24v 8.8Ah rack-mounted battery. For the price it is a great ebike, and although the battery will only give you around 20-30 miles maximum assisted range, that should be enough for most commutes or weekend rides in the country.

  • 250w rear electric hub motor
  • 24v 8.8Ah removable rack-mounted battery
  • 6-speed gearing
  • Integrated lights
  • Mudguards

CONS:
  • Low battery range
  • Considerably heavy at 25kg

Verdict
The B’TWIN Elops 500 E Classic step-thru is a great electric bike for the money. It has everything you need for commuting and is very comfortable to ride. The only downside is the limited battery range. It is also quite heavy due to the steel frame construction, this is not a problem with the e-assist on, but the weight is definitely noticeable with the electric switched off. Nonetheless it is incredible value for money and well worth a look.

Apollo Metis Women’s Step-Thru Electric Bike

The Apollo Metis women’s electric step-thru bike is available exclusively through Halfords  and is the cheapest e-bike in this selection. The Metis is very well equipped for the price, and uses a small 250w front wheel electric hub motor with a low-capacity 209Wh rack-mounted battery. Despite the low price, it comes well equipped with mudguards, pannier rack and kickstand.

  • 250w front electric hub motor

  • Mudgaurds
  • Pannier rack

CONS:
  • Low range battery 20-25 miles max
  • Rim brakes
  • Quite heavy at 22kg

Verdict
For the money you can’t really get any better than the Apollo Metis. I does have quite a basic specification and a low-capacity battery, but if you’re after a ‘no frills’ runabout and don’t want to spend loads of money, the Metis will happily take you around 20 miles with the e-assist. If you’re on a tight budget and don’t need anything too fancy, the Metis is hard to beat. It also has lots of positive customer reviews.
