Introducing the 2020 model Orbea Gain D50
I am a big fan of the Orbea Gain D50 Electric road bike, having ridden one of the earlier models. The small X35 Ebikemotion hub motor electric assist system is so lightweight, you barely notice it’s there – even when you are riding it without assist.
The latest 2020 model remains largely unchanged from the 2019, apart from a new choice of nice colour schemes.
If you haven’t ridden an ebike with the X35 drive system fitted yet, it is an incredibly smooth and discreet system. It doesn’t produce anywhere near the kind of torque you would find on a Bosch or Shimano steps-powered electric bike, but the latter systems incur a significant weight penalty, whereas the Gain still feels just like a regular bike.
I’m also a big fan of the Fazua Evation system, but even with this motor, the downtube and bottom bracket area are substantially larger in order to house the battery and motor drive system.
X35 Ebikemotion Electric Assist
With the X35 Ebikemotion system everything is neatly integrated into, what looks like a regular frame.
The X35 system uses a small geared hub motor producing 250w of maximum power. The pedal assist on the ebikemotion system is unorthodox, as it uses neither a cadence or torque sensor. Instead a sensor ring measures the speed of your rear cassette in relation to how quickly your rear wheel is turning.
The resulting pedal assist is incredibly smooth, and the transition to normal pedalling when the 15.5mph (25km/h) maximum speed is reached is barely noticeable.
Is the Orbea Gain D50 suited to me?
This really depends on your cycling ability. Having ridden several bikes that use this system, and then going out and riding a Bosch powered bike, the difference is like night and day!
The X35 drive system will definitely start to struggle on anything above 10%. I weigh around 110kg and I felt riding up a 12% gradient (sustained over half a mile) that, although the motor helped take the sting out of the climb, it didn’t have the powerful boost offered by the Bosch CX motor.
If you have knee problems or other health issues that prevent you from cycling hard, I would personally stick with a Bosch, Shimano Steps or Yamaha powered electric bike. If you are looking for an enhanced cycling experience and just want to climb a little faster, and not suffer from as much fatigue on a group ride, then the Orbea Gain D50 is ideal.
