Pinnacle Mercury 2021 Electric Hybrid Bike

Introducing the new electric bike from Pinnacle – the 2021 Mercury hybrid e-bike. Here we have a very interesting competitor to the Carrera Subway E and on my sister website ebikechoices.com I will be doing a full Carrera Subway E vs Pinnacle Mercury comparison article.

About the Pinnacle Mercury

The Mercury reaches new heights for an E-bike at this price – a sleek, fully frame-integrated 374W/h battery, the proven Bafang G020 rear hub motor and everything Pinnacle know about creating a natural and smile-inducing ride feel in bikes like this, all combined to make this the best value E-bike we’ve ridden yet.

You want more freedom – freedom to ride without the hills dictating so much of your route or to ride purely for the experience with assistance to help breeze you along when needed? The Pinnacle Mercury gives you just that, with 3 intuitive modes of power assist and a full 45Nm torque Bafang G020 motor for a sporty response and a battery with up to 75km range under average road use.

Key Features

  • Hydraulic Mountain Bike disc brakes for consistent stopping power and control in any situation.
  • High-volume 2.2″ wide tyres and 27.5 MTB format rims float over rougher roads and carry the additional weight of the battery and motor more smoothly than thin tyres, as well as increasing efficiency when used at the correct pressures for longer range from the battery life.
  • The frame and forks are designed to handle off-road use confidently so you can leave the road behind and take those quiet byways, just to see where they go.
  • Mount water bottles on your forks, or fit full mudguards and a rack for civilised commuting experience – the Mercury is adaptable for weekender to weekday use.

The new Pinnacle Mercury - is it better than the Carrera Subway E?
At a first glance the all-new 2021 Pinnacle Mercury electric bike looks like it could be a serious alternative to the Carrera Subway E. For starters it has a neatly integrated (and removeable) lithium battery as opposed to the external battery pack found on the Subway. It also uses the proven and incredibly reliable Bafang rear hub motor - now, I know the Carrera range of e-bikes have had their fair share of electrical issues, but my personal experience with Bafang hub motor is that I haven't experienced a single failure or major issue, despite installing nearly one hundred of these motors over the last 4 years. The Pinnacle Mercury looks promising and I will be doing a full review on my sister website very soon... Whatch this space!

Had this bike about a month now been looking for somewhere to write a review
Its absolutely brilliant, bought from Evans cycles came fully assembled, just had to adjust seat & front wheel
Also got a Carerra Subway e bike i love that had it since June but i have to say this one is far better especially in wintery weather
Has 5 speeds but usually only go to bar 2/3…love that you can’t see the battery would recommend this bike to all oh & the seat is quite comfortable as well.. By the way i’m 64 in June & have already done 200km + on this bike….

+ PROS: easy to ride battery life excellent looks great Fantastic price
    - CONS: none

bought this bike for my wife from evans cycles .been out on 4 trips with her she loves the bike ,first battery charge she has done 27 miles still had 2 bars left on the battery ,been on level 1 to 4 done quite a few hills she said it done what she expected and more ,digital display is very basic it shows battery life and level of power you are using ,but i have contacted evans as there is no information about the battery warranty, nothing on their web site or in the owners manual ,their click to chat team do not know ,so i called the shop they do not know but said they would contact the manufacturer on monday to fined out .we will see ,otherwise wife is very pleased ,she has not been on a bike for 10 years

+ PROS: nice looking ,not to heavy ,integrated battery, comes with a stand ,good brakes ,and gears are great ,
    - CONS: no information on battery warranty would have been nice with mudguards and lights .display is basic

I love this bike – it does everything I ask of it, however at 72 with arthritic hands I find the peddle assist buttons on the handlebar display difficult to operate.

Additionally, the owner leaflet is very unhelpful and the staff at our local Evans were unable to help me with queries as apparently they had never seen nor had any experience of the Pinnacle Mercury!

+ PROS: Nicely engineered, easy to re-charge, gives a comfortable ride.
    - CONS: Handlebar display buttons difficult to operate. No information on the battery. Shop staff should have been briefed on this bike before it went on sale.

Unfortunately loved the bike when brought at Christmas for my wife and she loved it. But after a couple a very short rides (5miles) we noticed battery indicator was reading half full. We tried several more rides but the battery was running out at about 10 to 12 miles even with staying on lowest eco mode and switching off with anoly a few hundred yards using higher modes on small hills. We returned the bike and Evans responded by saying the average expect mileage is 10 to 15miles in an email, not what was expected.

+ PROS: Looks good and clear instructions on power modes. Build quality average.
    - CONS: Useless range only achieving 10 to 12 miles and Evans confirming this is their expect average range.

I bought this bike in March 2021 and have only done a short 2 mile test ride so far. As others have commented, there are no instructions on the battery and I didn’t get anything relating to the power modes either – it’s as if the electrification was an afterthought. The shop staff were poorly briefed and the website states 3 levels of power assist when there are 5 bars available. Small buttons are difficult to operate with gloves on.

So why the 4 star review ?

Well it’s a fabulous looking bike with a neatly integrated battery and cable system. I’m not a fan of the bikes that have block batteries on the down tube and or controllers on the seat tube. The cables are integrated into the frame and overall it’s a brilliant package. I had a budget of about £2k and couldn’t believe the sticker price of £1100.

The motor is very quiet and surprisingly powerful. The 8 speed gears are easy to operate and the geometry is almost perfect for me as a shortish rider. I set off on a decent gradient in 2nd gear at power level 2 whereas I would have used PAS 5 and the throttle on my previous bike. The brakes feel just right although I’d like an earlier bite on the rear calliper.

I was disappointed that the tyres had been set to 20 psi whereas the sidewall states a minimum of 40 (max 60). First proper ride is this weekend so I’ll have a better idea of range.

+ PROS: Great looking bike at a very competitive price. One of the few 2021 bikes available to buy.
    - CONS: No instructions for battery or ebike functions (PAS etc). Limited staff knowledge.

Bought this a few weeks ago ,unfortunately i had to have a replacement as the original bike motor wasn’t working . The replacement is an excellent machine which makes cycling so much more enjoyable. The bike looks and performs smartly , I would have preferred a larger motor control panel but it does the job. I am still learning about the battery efficiency ,have had up to 22 miles on full assist so not bad .
I have not been able to source a UK battery supplier as I would like to buy a back up. Any assistance would be most welcome.

+ PROS: Competitive cost , slick design .
    - CONS: Motor setting /battery life indicator is small.

Purchased the Pinnacle Mercury for my wife, and although easy to ride and looking good it has a serious issue with range. The maximum we achieved was only 12 miles on a full charge. O raising this with Evans they responded saying and I quote “On average depending on how you use bike, the terrine on, and the riders weight, the battery mileage will vary, however on avg between 10-15 miles for this size of battery is correct” I would ne recommend this Ebkie.

+ PROS: Looks, Ease of use
    - CONS: Range on full charge only 10 to 15miles, stated by Evans Customer Service

Bought this for my wife & she says it’s brilliant. We’ve been out 3 times and done 65 miles in total. Charged the battery after 45 miles and still had 2 bars on the display.the motor is very quiet and it’s a really nice looking bike especially with the removable battery in the frame. Great quality bike at a great price.

+ PROS: Battery range, nice to ride and looks great
    - CONS: None

Superb bike, looks great, rides well and with the bike tyres and weight it’s very stable. Accidentally went off road for 5 miles and just pumped it up to 5 and it handled it well. Appropriate tyres and it would be a good off roader.
The riding position is a little tight for me and I would prefer a slightly bigger bike.
Range has been awesome for me I easily get 40 miles out of it even riding the majority on the highest power.
If I’m just doing 20-30 miles I just put it on max power and enjoy the scenery!
I am going to upgrade to a computer system as the current system is basic, but for £1100 you are not going to get better, you are probably not going to get better until you are way over £2000!!
I have bought a ladies version for the wife, will report and see if it is the same as mine.

+ PROS: Price! Looks Stability Battery life
    - CONS: I do want to up grade to a computer. It is heavy, so would be hard to put on the roof of a car, if you aren’t strong.

Great bike and a lovely colour. I bought it a few weeks ago from Evans in Sutton Coldfield. The gear transition is great. I had an issue with the battery assist coming in but when it did I easily cycled up hills. I mainly use the battery assist on hills. My only issue is I paid £1100 pounds for the bike so to say it should be £769 leaves me feeling a bit ripped off. Mudguards and lights paid for as extras.

+ PROS: Easy to ride. Great looking bike.
    - CONS: The price
