The Bafang BBS01B 250w 48v is a safe bet if you want to stay on the right side of the law. It doesn’t have the raw power or grin factor of the 500w or 750w, but you can ride it to your hearts content safe in the knowledge that your e-bike is legal. If you’re looking the a road legal conversion kit then the Bafang BBS01B 250w 48v is hard to beat for the price.
Summary
Thanks to its ‘plug and play’ design the Bafang BBS01B will fit a majority of regular bicycles with a few exceptions. Providing your bike has a standard BSA threaded bottom bracketthen installation should be fairly straightforward for the competent DIY enthusiast.
The Bafang BBS01B 36v 250w is the perfect conversion kit for a daily commuter or leisure bike. You can even add this kit to your mountain bike to make riding on steep trails less of an effort.
This 48v version means the motor will be drawing a lower current (amps) to achieve the same power output. Lower current means less heat build-up and ultimately more efficiency and better longevity.
If you don’t mind experimenting with the controller settings you can purchase a USB programming cable and download the free open source software– for more information on how to do this safely, follow the instructions on Karl’s electricbike-blog. The 250w and 350w are the same motor, the only difference is the 250w is set at 15A and the 350w is 18A. Obviously to stay within the confines of the law you should not increase the motor current as this will also increase the continuous power output. You can still fine-tune the pedal assist parameters and make the BBS01B super-smooth on the uptake.
Increasing the current on the BBS01B to 18A will take the continuous power output to 350w and make it illegal to use in public spaces and the road. Do not change this setting (if you want to stay within the law)
Neat installation – because of the design, a Bafang BBS01B installation if done correctly will result in a very neat and professional looking e-bike conversion.
Choose your power! Most of the Bafang display units allow the rider to choose from up to 9 gradually incremented levels of assist. This means that you as the rider can either decide to stay within your comfort zone (for pedalling) or maybe push yourself that little bit hard and share the workload with the motor. I have written a separate article on using an e-bike to get fit and lose weight on my other website.

Legal notice
If you want to stay the right side of the law (in the UK and EU) then this is the version to buy. The important thing is the ‘rated power’ which on this model is quite clearly stated as 250w – this is the maximum continuous power the motor can produce, although like other e-bikes it will produce significantly higher peak power for short bursts (when under load).
Conclusion
The Bafang BBS01B 48v will transform your humble commuter bike or mountain bike into a road-legal electric bike that will rival your friends £2500 Bosch-powered e-bike for performance. It may not be as refined as the Bosch motor but for shear value for money, it’s hard to beat!
Please check out the review below for more information of the Bafang BBS01B 250w.
One of the main benefits of having a 48v battery vs 36v is the lower current draw on the controller. This means lower temperatures and more efficiency and reliability. The Bafang BBS01B 250w 48v would be my preferred choice over the 36v variant.
