The Bafang BBS02B 500w 36v electric bike conversion kit is another good alternative to the 750w version if you don’t really need the kind of power the latter produces. Personally I think the 36v 500w version of the BBS02B is powerful enough plus 36v batteries are a little easier on the wallet. For the full review of the Bafang BBS02B click the link at the bottom of this page.
This 36v 500w version of the Bafang BBS02B has also proven to be more reliable when compared with its 750w 48v counterpart.
Summary – what makes the Bafang BBS02B so great?
Thanks to its ‘plug and play’ design the Bafang BBS02B will fit a majority of regular bicycles with a few exceptions (see below). Providing your bike has a standard BSA threaded bottom bracketthen installation should be fairly straightforward for the competent DIY enthusiast.
A Bafang BBS02B conversion done correctly will produce a great looking E-Bike
This 500w 36v version of the BBS02B has a different motor controller which allows for the lower voltage battery, whilst keeping the current at 25A. This means the BBS02B 36v 500w still puts out near 1000w of peak power. Although I haven’t had any controller failures with this version I always knock the current back to 22A to allow a small buffer zone.
If you don’t mind experimenting with the controller settings you can purchase a USB programming cable and download the free open source software– for more information on how to do this safely, follow the instructions on Karl’s electricbike-blog. I personally recommend reducing the maximum current to 22A and lowering the start current on the pedal assist and throttle to 5% – this will make the start-up much smoother and reduce load on the motor and electronics.
Neat installation – because of the design, a Bafang BBS02B installation if done correctly will result in a very neat and professional looking e-bike conversion.
Choose your power! Most of the Bafang display units allow the rider to choose from up to 9 gradually incremented levels of assist. This means that you as the rider can either decide to stay within your comfort zone (for pedalling) or maybe push yourself that little bit hard and share the workload with the motor. I have written a separate article on using an e-bike to get fit and lose weight on my other website.

Legal notice
The Bafang BBS02B should not be used in public spaces or on the road in the UK due to current laws regarding the power output and speed of electric pedal cycles.
Conclusion
The Bafang BBS02B will turn your humble mountain bike into a high-performance off-road electric bike. I would strongly recommend that you only fit the kit to a good quality bike that has been fully serviced and has decent components (especially brakes). Installation can be challenging for the uninitiated and requires patience, the right tools and a certain degree of bicycle knowledge.
If you decide to re-configure the controller settings using the optional USB cable, I recommend reducing slightly to 22A although I’ve yet to experience any controller failures on this 36v 500w version.

The BBS02B 36v 500w is reliable and still performs exceptionally
The Bafang BBS02B 36v 500w is basically the same motor as the 750w but with a 36v controller set to 25A max current. Don't be fooled by the lower voltage though, this motor will still produce 900w peak power out of the box. 36v Batteries are generally a little cheaper than 48v and this version still performs incredibly well. Set the controller to 22A peak and enjoy hassle free e-bike riding!
