Bafang BBS02B 500w 48v Electric Bike Conversion Kit

The Bafang BBS02B 500w 48v electric bike conversion kit is a good alternative to the 750w version if you don’t really need the kind of power the latter produces. Summary – what makes the Bafang BBS02B so great?

Thanks to its ‘plug and play’ design the Bafang BBS02B will fit a majority of regular bicycles with a few exceptions (see below). Providing your bike has a standard BSA threaded bottom bracket  then installation should be fairly straightforward for the competent DIY enthusiast.

This 500w 48v version of the BBS02B has the maximum current capped off at 18A (in the firmware) but essentially it is the same as the 750w version. I personally prefer this model as it still goes very well indeed but I haven’t experienced any controller failures on this model – this is likely to be down to the lower current output of 18A (as opposed to 25A for the 750w).

If you don’t mind experimenting with the controller settings you can purchase a USB programming cable and download the free open source software  – for more information on how to do this safely, follow the instructions on Karl’s electricbike-blog. I personally recommend keeping the maximum current to 18A and lowering the start current on the pedal assist and throttle to 5% – this will make the start-up much smoother and reduce load on the motor and electronics.

Neat installation – because of the design, a Bafang BBS02B installation if done correctly will result in a very neat and professional looking e-bike conversion.

Choose your power! Most of the Bafang display units allow the rider to choose from up to 9 gradually incremented levels of assist. This means that you as the rider can either decide to stay within your comfort zone (for pedalling) or maybe push yourself that little bit hard and share the workload with the motor. The BBS02B 48v 500w is a sensible alternative to the 750w version.

The Bafang BBS02B 48v 500w is basically the same motor as the 750w but with the maximum current limited to 18A in the controller. Considering I usually limit the max current on the 750w BBS02B to 18A anyway it makes sense just to buy the 500w version (unless to want the 25A and1200w peak power of the 750w). I've always felt the 500w produces more than enough power. I've installed loads of this version over the last few years and haven't had any issues, unlike with the 750w version.
