Summary – what makes the Bafang BBS02B so great?
Thanks to its ‘plug and play’ design the Bafang BBS02B will fit a majority of regular bicycles with a few exceptions (see below). Providing your bike has a standard BSA threaded bottom bracket then installation should be fairly straightforward for the competent DIY enthusiast.

Another great thing about the Bafang BBS02B is the performance – A peak power output of between 1360w – 1470w is achievable depending on whether you use a 48v or 52v battery. These peak power figures are for a fully charged battery with the controller set at its 25A maximum current.
If you don’t mind experimenting with the controller settings you can purchase a USB programming cable and download the free open source software – for more information on how to do this safely, follow the instructions on Karl’s electricbike-blog. I personally recommend lowering the maximum current to 18A and lowering the start current on the pedal assist and throttle to 5% – this will make the start-up much smoother and reduce load on the motor and electronics.
Neat installation – because of the design, a Bafang BBS02B installation if done correctly will result in a very neat and professional looking e-bike conversion.
Choose your power! Most of the Bafang display units allow the rider to choose from up to 9 gradually incremented levels of assist. This means that you as the rider can either decide to stay within your comfort zone (for pedalling) or maybe push yourself that little bit hard and share the workload with the motor. I would strongly recommend that you only fit the kit to a good quality bike that has been fully serviced and has decent components (especially brakes). Installation can be challenging for the uninitiated and requires patience, the right tools and a certain degree of bicycle knowledge.
This latest 2021 model does seem to be more reliable than previous models, and if you follow my advice and limit the peak current to 18A and do not use a 52v battery then it should provide years of fun.
