The iconic Bafang BBSHD first burst onto the DIY e-bike scene back in 2015 and was an instant success. It has remained virtually unchanged apart from a few minor tweaks to the electrics and internals. For anyone who’s ever ridden a BBSHD-powered e-bike, the experience is usually unforgettable! Summary – what makes the Bafang BBSHD so great?
First and foremost riding a Bafang BBSHD-powered bike is guaranteed to make you grin from ear to ear. The way this motor produces power is just addictive – turn it up to level 9 and point your bike at a steep hill and the BBSHD will take you up there on wafts of seamless power which just keeps on pulling like a train!
The flip side to the coin is you can ride it around in the lowest power setting and it will still give you plenty of pedal assist whilst being incredibly energy efficient. I used to ride a BBSHD mountain bike a few years back and I could easily squeeze 100 miles out of a 48v 17.5Ah battery with range to spare.
Just like its smaller siblings the Bafang BBSHD will fit a majority of regular bicycles with a few exceptions. Providing your bike has a standard BSA threaded bottom bracket then installation should be fairly straightforward for the competent DIY enthusiast.

Unlike the BBS02B 750w, you can safely get away with using a 52v battery which on a full charge@58.8v will make the motor produce a whopping 1764w. This kind of power is not to be taken lightly and if you are using this off-road on private land I would recommend wearing full protective gear.
If you don’t mind experimenting with the controller settings you can purchase a USB programming cable and download the free open source software – for more information on how to do this safely, follow the instructions on Karl’s electricbike-blog. You don’t really need to lower the maximum current as the controller on the BBSHD will handle this current all day long. You may, however want to reduce the start current on PAS and throttle down to 5% as this motor can make your bike wheelie in full power mode and low gear on start-up.
Neat installation – because of the design, a Bafang BBSHD installation if done correctly will result in a very neat and professional looking e-bike conversion.
Choose your power! Most of the Bafang display units allow the rider to choose from up to 9 gradually incremented levels of assist. This means that you as the rider can either decide to stay within your comfort zone (for pedalling) or maybe push yourself that little bit hard and share the workload with the motor. Conclusion
The Bafang BBSHD is a great e-bike motor and as the ‘heavy-duty’ name suggests, it’s incredibly robust and only accounted for a small amount of electrical problems when I used to install them and other motors. In fact I’m still in touch with several of my early customers who are still having fun on their BBSHD-powered MTB’s 3-4 years and 1000’s of miles after installation. The BBSHD is great fun and will run rings around e-MTB’s costing several thousand pounds.
